Cebu International School was started in 1924, as the American School of Cebu with a small elementary population. In 1973 the school became Cebu International School, still an elementary school. In 1987 the school graduated its first high school class and since that time has been a full Kindergarten to Grade 12 institution.

The school now has a permanent base at Pit-os. We moved here in August 2000. Previously the school had two sites. In its early years it was located on Gorordo Avenue. Prior to moving to Pit-os the school grew up on a site by the Banilad road. Our new campus has 3.2 hectares of land, 7,500 square meters of instructional space which includes classrooms, laboratories, computer rooms, art rooms, music rooms, canteen, offices and a gymnasium. The football field is full-sized, the car park can hold 150 cars and the compound is very secure.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Brent School accepts students regardless of race, creed, or color. Students are accepted and maintained on the basis of their ability to meet the academic and behavioral standards of the School. Students are admitted to all grades on the basis of the previous school records, personal interviews, character references from a teacher and from the Principal or Guidance Counselor at their previous school and a certificate of good health. Along with the completed application form, applicants for Nursery, Kindergarten and Grade 1 must submit a birth certificate. A school-administered achievement test determines grade placement. Although applications are accepted throughout the year and midyear enrollment is possible, submission of applications is preferred by July of each year to ensure a full-year enrollment. The School assists expatriate students in obtaining a study permit from the Department of Education, Culture and Sports. The School reserves the right to refuse admission to any student who does not meet all admission requirements, and no student is officially enrolled until these admission requirements are met. The School decides on the placement of a student.  No student will be placed in a grade level without records or a certificate of satisfactory completion of the preceding grade. Brent School's program consists of six high school years beyond the sixth grade of elementary school.

Non-English Speaking Students
Students whose competence in English is not sufficient for them to actively take part and benefit from the regular instruction program will be enrolled in the English Language Support Program (ELSP). Students are classified according to level of knowledge and proficiency in the English language. They may be associated with a special class based on age, but this association does not imply the rights of that specific class. While in the ELSP, a student will participate in some regular classes such as Music, Art, PE. etc. Such a student will be mainstreamed into the regular classes either totally or in part as soon as proficiency and knowledge of English are assessed as adequate, and upon recommendation of the ELSP teachers. Credits will be given only for the subjects in which the student has been mainstreamed. Students seeking to obtain a Brent School Diploma must be fully mainstreamed for Grades 11 and 12.

Grades 11 & 12
The program at this level consists of a two-year curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate Program. A student from another school seeking admission into Grade 12 is therefore not normally considered.

Admission

All inquiries regarding admission should be directed to the registrar. The Superintendent makes final decisions.

Evangelical Missionary Children

In keeping with the intention of the original purpose as stated in the Articles of Incorporation, Faith Academy usually accepts the children of missionary families. Children with English as their second language, wishing to enroll must achieve a minimum acceptable score on a standardized English proficiency test for the age of the child and the grade level in which he/she plans to enter. Transfer students are accepted provisionally until satisfactory evidence of honorable dismissal is received from the school previously attended.

Other Children

A limited number of children from non-missionary families have been given special permission to attend Faith. Parents are interviewed by the registrar before acceptance. Transfer from other schools within the Philippines is discouraged. Christian commitment of parents, availability of teachers, and classroom space are some of the factors considered in accepting non-missionary children. The children should rank with the average or the above average of their class.

Kindergarten and First Grade Entrance

A child entering Kindergarten must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be accepted by the teaching and counseling staff through:
    1. Required attendance in the pre-kindergarten sessions if living in Metro Manila at that time. Pre-kindergarten is during second semester.
    2. Evaluation and testing during his/her first three weeks of kindergarten if not living in Metro Manila at the time of pre-kindergarten.
  2. Reach his/her fifth birth date on or before September 1 of the year enrollment is anticipated.

Before entering First Grade, a child who did not attend Faith Academy the previous school year must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be evaluated and tested as ready by the teaching and counseling staff in the first three weeks of attendance.
  1. Reach his/her sixth birthday on or before September 1 of the year enrollment is anticipated.

New and Transferring Elementary Students

Before entering Grades 2-5, a child who did not attend Faith Academy the previous school year must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be evaluated and tested for grade placement by the teaching staff and counseling staff in the first three weeks of attendance.
  1. Make arrangements for past academic records to be sent to Faith Academy. The school accepts hand carried records brought from home countries.

Handicapped Children

Children with physical or emotional handicaps will be accepted as personnel are available to make it possible for such students to receive profit from a normal classroom experience. Students with learning disabilities will be accepted as long as they can profit from their classroom experience while receiving additional remedial and supportive instruction from specialists. Specific guidelines are detailed in "Admission Guidelines for Students Needing Special Help." (Administrative Policy Handbook AP 1.02 may be requested)

Late Entrance

Late entrance will be determined by the following Board policies:

  1. It is expected that any child entering classes be present for the opening of the school. (Reasons: (a) social adjustment becomes increasingly difficult as time goes by, (b) important concepts and the basic foundations of each class or subject are laid during these early days, (c) everyday routines are established early in the quarter).
  1. A high school student will not normally enter classes after the end of the first quarter. Any exception to this will be based upon a parent conference and a principal’s recommendation to the Superintendent.
  1. Grade placement will be made after testing, review of previous school records and recommendation by the Guidance Department. A late arriving student may be required to repeat work.
  1. Students entering high school after the third week of a semester will not be given credit for the semester.
  1. A student missing fifteen (15) days in one semester and thirty (30) days in one year will be considered a candidate for failure in the respective semester/year.
  1. Specific Guidelines for Elementary Students.

It is in the best interest of your child to be present starting with the first day of the school year and to complete the entire school year with his/her class. Children arriving late may be placed in a lower grade if they are not able to work successfully in the anticipated grade level. Teachers, in consultation with the counselor and principal, may recommend that children who have missed too much school for any reason be assigned to the next grade level with the stipulation that he/she be under observation during the first weeks of the next school year to determine whether the child is indeed ready for that grade. Please note: Guideline #5 above applies to all students K-12.

Transfer Students

Secondary students who anticipate enrolling in grades 6-12 should examine carefully the section of "Curriculum" before making application, being certain that a transfer will not cause the repetition of a subject other than Bible or Physical Education. Parents should be sure to request that records be sent to Faith Academy from the school their children are leaving.
